Burnout and stress-induced pain

Specialized therapies for stress recovery

Accumulated stress can become a mechanism of pain.

Chronic stress and disrupted nervous system balance

Stress, as a medical concept, is anything that burdens our body and nervous system. In this context, everything we experience, do, or think—no matter how unpleasant or pleasurable—constitutes a form of stress. Stress can be divided into that which we can recover from daily and that which we fail to fully recover from, and thus it ‘accumulates.’

Only when we begin to experience mood changes (withdrawal, irritability, outbursts of anger, absence) and physiological changes (e.g., elevated heart rate, hormonal fluctuations, muscle spasms, high blood pressure) that may lead to pain or health problems, can we speak of long-term excessive stress levels. These physiological and mood changes are initially subtle, serving as warnings that the body is overloaded and that lifestyle adjustments are needed.

Therapy that doesn’t eliminate stress—but teaches the body to cope with it.

A neurological approach to stress

Chronic stress and its impact on the body as a whole is primarily addressed by psychosomatics. Psychosomatics is an interdisciplinary field of medicine and psychology that studies the influence and connection between the mind and body (soma = body) within the context of health. It examines bodily pain that arises due to chronic psychological stress.

Stress often accumulates where no one can see it. That’s why there is therapy designed to recognize it and help you release the pain it causes.

"Highly emotional events and constant exposure to high levels of stress have a strong negative impact on our autonomic nervous system, making it oversensitive to certain everyday stimuli that are otherwise completely harmless. This hypersensitivity can lead to various functional disorders in the body. The warnings we receive from such overload, or chronic imbalance due to hypersensitivity, are not ‘officially’ explained medically and lack a clear cause, until the broader picture and the interconnections of the entire body are considered."

Therapeutic techniques we apply

Craniosacral Therapy / Emmett / MFR

These gentle yet deeply effective therapies focus on improving the function of the central nervous system through manipulation of the craniosacral rhythm and muscle fascia. By relieving tension in the body and mind, we reduce your hypersensitivity to common stress stimuli. This approach increases your capacity to cope with stress while simultaneously alleviating the sensation of pain.

P - DTR

An advanced form of neurological therapy that focuses on identifying and resolving dysfunctions in your nervous system, which may be the underlying causes of chronic stress and emotional trauma. Completely non-invasive and painless, P-DTR helps the body 'reset' and return to a state of balance, reducing hypersensitivity to stress.

Burnout, what?

"What do my gut, brain, and stress have to do with my pain? I came because it hurts when I walk.”

A woman in her late 30s came to us due to a severely diminished quality of life, to the point where walking had become difficult.

She experienced pain in multiple areas of the body, including the knees, lower legs, feet, both hips, lower back, and left shoulder blade. Additionally, she was sensitive to sounds and light, indicating a global hypersensitivity of the nervous system.

Walking in hard-soled shoes intensified foot pain, as did activities without shoes. Driving and sitting on hard surfaces triggered knee and tailbone pain, while strength training caused lower back discomfort. Most daily activities had become difficult and uncomfortable.

After diagnostics, our first step was to increase her body’s capacity to better handle stress. Then, combining therapeutic techniques targeting both the mechanical and neurological aspects of the body, we worked on restoring function and eliminating the existing pain. She reported relief in the hip area after the first therapy session, along with a significant reduction in the mental exhaustion caused by pain.

During the therapeutic process, her symptoms gradually decreased, including gastritis. At the final check-up, she reported complete relief from pain, ease of movement, and reduced stress levels outside of work, while her previous hypersensitivity to light and sound was no longer present.

To maintain achieved mobility, relaxation, and quality of life, we arranged further training focused on developing muscle strength. Ongoing work on physical activity and preventive measures is crucial for long-term preservation of quality of life and enjoyment of daily activities.

FROM PAIN TO PERFORMANCE

Questions and Answers

Burnout and stress-induced pain

01How can I recognize if my pain is caused by stress?

Pain can be attributed to stress if there was no prior trauma or injury near the painful area, and its onset coincides with periods of intense stress or occurs exclusively in situations or environments that trigger stress.

Burnout and stress-induced pain

02Can physically active individuals also develop stress-induced pain?

Of course. In the long term, physical activity acts as a form of 'stress relief' therapy, but in the short term, it is stressful—it adds to the load on our nervous system. When combined with high levels of psychological stress, it can contribute to burnout, and consequently, to pain caused by such a condition.

03Can the pain return after undergoing therapy?

If the perceived stress on the nervous system is not reduced, burnout can recur. Our therapies are aimed at calming the nervous system so the body does not react negatively to every incoming stressor and at 'correcting' dysfunctions caused by stress. Therefore, to ensure long-term protection against burnout, it is necessary to keep the nervous system relaxed to better and more effectively cope with stress, or to reduce the amount of stress in your environment.
